.... Once the fabric is woven and taken off the loom these supplemental threads are gathered, pleating the fabric. An 80" length of fabric is compressed to 14" by pleating. The surface of the gathered cloth is painted with thickened dyes. When the length of fabric is umpleated or decompressed, the image is also decompressed, pulled longer. The imagery in my work is inspired by shapes and forces which inform the natural world: patterns on water and sand created by wind, the smooth roundness of rock polished by water, a feather shaped by the flow of air, and shadows of objects, pulled long.
