...ts, I'm usually exploring the general theme of my relation with my environment. My paintings sometimes appear tangled and complex, and like life, offer interrupted views.
Approaching painting in this way offers a sense of commonplace reality, translated into a heightened, and hopefully, timeless moment. Living experience in real-time is how I practice my art. I categorize my work as Contemporary Realist.
The studio at Copper Ridge in Colorado is always open for visits by appointment and is the nucleus for artists Pat Walsh, Maggie Smith, Sierra Campbell, Christopher Oar, Julie Anderson, Monroe Hodder, and Greg Grasso. It's a thriving artists' community.
Early on I was influenced by the Fauvists (like Andre` Derain) for their vibrant use of color. The English painter, Peter Doig is my hero to emulate and my style is further impacted by Richard Prince, Jennifer Bartlett, Darshan Phillips, Julius Hatofsky and most all of the Northern California abstract Expressionist painters, such as David Park, Nathan Olivera, Richard Diebenkorn, and WayneThiebaud.
I studied painting (and welding) at the San Francisco Art Institute (1989–92) beginning study with the magnificent Joan Brown before her untimely death in India. There is/was much to be learned from Carlos Villa, Julius Hatofsky, and Chester Arnold. Art methodologies with Chester Arnold at College of Marin is an amazing class. My years of private study with abstract expressionist painter Julius Hatofsky I remember as one of the best parts of studying art.
I like to paint.

(Contemporary Art: Term loosely used to denote art of the present day and of the relatively recent past, of an innovatory or avant-garde nature. In relation to contemporary art museums, the date of origin for the term contemporary art varies. The Institute of Contemporary Art in London, founded in 1947, champions art from that year onwards. Whereas The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York chooses the later date of 1977. In the 1980s, The Tate planned a Museum of Contemporary Art in which contemporary art was defined as art of the past ten years on a rolling basis.)
